DP- Ages 16-18
The IB Diploma Programme
Taihu International School is a fully authorised IB Diploma school. The first students in D1 began their full Diploma courses in August 2011. The school saw its first IB Diploma graduates in summer 2013.
The IB Diploma Programme is designed as an academically challenging and balanced programme of education with final examinations which prepare students, normally aged 16 to 19, for success at university and life beyond. The programme is normally taught over two years and has gained recognition and respect from the world's leading universities. At Taihu International School the language of instruction is English.
IB Diploma Programme students study six courses, three at higher level and three at standard level. Students must choose one subject from each of groups 1 to 5, thus ensuring breadth of experience in languages, social studies, the experimental sciences and mathematics. The sixth subject may be an arts subject chosen from group 6, or the student may choose another subject from groups 1 to 5.
In addition the programme has three core requirements that are included to broaden the educational experience and challenge students to apply their knowledge and understanding.
The extended essay
is a requirement for students to engage in independent research through an in-depth study of a question relating to one of the subjects they are studying.
Theory of knowledge is a course designed to encourage each student to reflect on the nature of knowledge by critically examining different ways of knowing (perception, emotion, language and reason) and different kinds of knowledge (scientific, artistic, mathematical and historical).
Creativity, action, service requires that students actively learn from the experience of doing real tasks beyond the classroom. Students can combine all three components or do activities related to each one of them separately.
Students take written examinations at the end of the programme, which are marked by external IB examiners. Students also complete assessment tasks in the school, which are either initially marked by teachers and then moderated by external moderators or sent directly to external examiners.
We provide the only fully authorised International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) for year 11 and 12 students in Wuxi. We can offer a impressive range of diploma subjects for a school our size - English, Chinese, German, history, information technology in a global society (ITGS), business & management, biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, visual art, music and theory of knowledge (TOK).
All DP students take part in a creativity, action and service programme, which is a natural extension to the MYP community and service. They complete an extended essay in a subject of their choice which allows them to devote serious time and effort into a subject area about which they are truly passionate, in preparation for university research.
Our students take part in a rich, diverse, engaging and stimulating educational experience which builds their academic skills and knowledge, develops their awareness of other cultures, and also helps them grow into well-balanced young adults ready to lead our world into a brighter future.
Students who do not want to receive an IB Diploma also have the option to earn a TIS High School Graduation Diploma. They will take the same IB classes but do not have to write external exams just in school exams. This diploma is for students wishing to attend North American and European colleges and is less rigorous than the IB program.
