Daria Duncan-Weber, the Chairperson of TIS, founded Taihu International School as a private company in 1999 to meet the needs of the foreign community in and around Wuxi for a true international school with international teachers and an international curriculum. It is governed by a three person Executive Board which consists of the two owners and the Head of School. The school began in a villa in Venice Gardens and then moved to a purpose built facility in 2007.
The school has occupied a rented, purpose built building in a residential area of Wuxi since 2007. The spacious and attractive campus included an indoor gymnasium, a library, an Information Communication Technology (ICT) laboratory, a canteen, regular as well as specialist teaching areas, administrative spaces and a large outdoor play and sports area. The local authorities provided the building, using input from the school with respect to requirements.
TIS first approached IBO in 2006 for PYP authorization and received it in 2008, followed by MYP authorization in 2009. The DP program was received in 2011 making TIS an IB World school authorized for the IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) and the IB Diploma Programme (DP).The school also approached CIS, WASC and NCCT in March 2007 with a view to entering the accreditation process. The Preliminary Visit took place in September 2008. The school successfully received WASC/CIS authorization in 2010. Our students are equipped with the skills needed to transfer to other educational systems, and to apply to universities worldwide upon graduation.
Unfortunately current Chinese law stipulates that admission to international schools in China is only for children who own passports recognized as foreign by the Chinese government.
