M2-3 Science students have been studying a Unit of Inquiry called 'Mixing and Separating'. Having developed knowledge and understanding of mixtures and common separation methods (such as filtration, simple distillation, crystallisation, settlement and chromatography) students were given a practical challenge. They had to separate out a mixture of sand, stones, Iron pieces, a soluble salt and water in to its individual substances. Students worked in small groups to design and carry out their procedure, over two Science lessons. They then had to reflect and evaluate on the process, including suggesting improvements to their procedure in order to separate the mixture more efficiently. All groups managed to separate this 5 part mixture, using a range of different techniques. Well done to all!!
